Roger spoke from Acts 1:6-8. He shared how when his 8 year old daughter was flying interstate with him she regularly asked “Are we there yet?” In a sense the disciples were asking Jesus the same question. They, like the people of Israel in the Old Testament were thinking that God had blessed them and that was all but God had said they were blessed so others could also be blessed. How Jesus answers that question reshaped their lives. In reality He says, “We aren’t there yet” and He added that the Holy Spirit who would be given to them would enable them to share the Good News in all the places he told them about. In Acts 2-7 they shared in Jerusalem and Judea. In Acts 8 they shared in Samaria, and in the rest of Acts they went into the then known world. Roger then shared a story about the way God had spoken into the life of a woman called Inn in Thailand who had some dreams about Jesus and who came into a relationship with Jesus, and he shared how God was going ahead of the missionaries to get His work done. The key thing to remember is that God is already out in the world doing His work. Often we have a flawed idea about sharing Jesus. We think that God exists in the church and we have to take Him out into an evil world and share Him there. The reality is that God is already out in the world working and we are to follow Him into that world and discover where He is working and join Him in that work. In Acts 8 we see Philip invited to go to the desert to meet an Ethiopian who is reading the scripture (God is already working in him) and in Acts 10 we see Peter invited by Jesus to go and minister to a man and his family where God is already working. We are to follow Jesus into our particular world whether locally or across the world so by the work of the Holy Spirit in and through us we can make a difference. 20/5/2012: "Until All Have Heard" Pastor Geoff Rowse - Genesis 12:1-3 & Matthew 5:35-38 Download Nearly 2 billion people have not heard the Good News of Jesus in a way that relates to them in their culture and language. Pastor Geoff shared that there are 3 main ways God speaks to us about being involved with Missions. 1. MOVED BY GOD’S WORD *In Genesis 12:1-3 God speaks to Abraham asking him to leave his land and family and go to a land where God will build a great nation from him and will bless the world through him. Abraham goes and God’s plan is put into action. *In Isaiah 6 God reveals Himself to Isaiah in a vision and as Isaiah sees God in all His holiness he falls on his face and tells God that he is unclean. God cleanses him and then reveals that he has a plan for Israel and the nations, and Isaiah says to God that He will be God’s person to speak to the nations. *In Psalm 49:6 God tells Israel that they are to be a light to the Gentiles so that they might experience God’s salvation. So in the OT God reveals that he wants to use individuals and Israel to be a blessing to all nations. In the Gospels we read that Jesus becomes God’s missionary as He is sent to reveal God and to die on a cross for the salvation of the world. Jesus makes it clear that all peoples are included in this plan. As He leaves the earth to return to heaven He tells the disciples to Go into all the world and preach the Good News. In the rest of the NT we see the church under the direction of the Holy Spirit doing just that and the gospel spreads everywhere. God is a God of Mission and we are to be involved in that great mission task He has for us. 2. MOVED BY OTHERS When we come into relationship with Jesus we also come into relationship with each other as God’s Family. In Hebrews 11 we read some of the stories of God’s people from the past while in ch 12 we read that they are cheering us on in the grandstands like a crowd cheering on athletes in a stadium. We are to spur each other on to love and good deeds. God uses other Christians to move us into involvement with His missions ministry. God has used all kinds of people in my life to do this. My uncle and aunty opened their home on our farm so missionaries could come and speak and God used those people to move me. God has used missionaries from many places to do the same. He has used books and newsletters and stories from church history to touch my life and get me more involved in missions. The stories of the Moravian Christians are just one example. They were willing to become slaves to reach the slaves of the West Indies. When they arrived at their destination to begin their missionary work they burned their ships as a sign that they would stay and do the work. They were backed by people who were amazingly committed to prayer for them including one group who held a prayer meeting that lasted 100 years. God speaks to us through others who love Jesus and urges us on to be involved in His missions ministry. 3. MOVED BY THE NEED In Matthew 9:35-38 Jesus is moved with compassion as he sees the crowds and he urges His disciples to pray that the Lord of the harvest will send out labourers into the harvest. The needs of the world both in terms of physical and spiritual needs are great today. There are still 2 billion people who haven’t yet heard the Good News. It is estimated today that 33% of the worlds population claim to be Christian, 40% are not Christian even though the gospel has been shared with them while 27% have not heard the gospel and if things continue as they are they never will. 13/5/2012: Mother's Day On Mother's Day we were delighted to have 4 of our own ladies share with us briefly about how a particular aspect of the character of God is really important to them. You will be blessed as you listen to their experiences and reflections! 6/5/2012: Real Marriage Pastor Graeme Prentice - Eph 5:22-33 Download What does it take to make a good marriage? 1) Be covenantal: Malachi 2:14 says ‘she is the wife of your marriage covenant’, and in Eph 5:22-33 Paul compares marriage to the close relationship between Christ and the church. Whereas a contract is designed to protect the parties involved, a covenant is an unconditional, lifelong commitment regardless of the response of the other person. 1 Cor 7:4 describes it as an absolute giving of each other. Marriage is covenantal, (although sometimes broken by violence, adultery), and in this covenant relationship, sexuality is expressed. We are advised not to be ‘unequally yoked’ (2 Cor 6:14) - choose a marriage partner who shares the same values, and when dating begin by taking the long term view - think about what your life may be like with this person in 30, or 50 years. Remember that the marriage relationship goes through phases - the initial phase of married bliss, often followed by the busyness and demands of raising young children. There can be times of conflict as husband and wife resolve issues and find a way forward, and there can be seasons of peace when many of the big issues have been settled. Maturity comes in a relationship, with a deeper and stronger understanding of each other and a companionship which grows. 2) Be friends & companions Song of Songs 5;16 and Genesis 2:18 It takes a lifetime to truly get to know someone! Whilst it is important to have a circle of friends, your spouse needs to be your best friend. There needs to be a clear delineation between the particular relationship you have with your spouse and the level of friendships held with other people. Be careful that your marriage relationship does not develop into a ‘business’ relationship where demands of careers and parenting push your marriage relationship to the side. What are some indicators of how a marriage is going? *How often do you pray together? *How often do you do something socially together? *Who is the first person you phone when something significant happens? Deut 24:5 - bring happiness to one another.. Prov 5:18 - Rejoice in the wife of your youth. Be captivated by your partner, and have everyone else pale in the light of them! 29/4/2012: Real Singleness Pastor Graeme Prentice - 1Cor 6:12-20 Download What does it mean to live a single life? How many of us does it affect? Graeme explores singleness from 3 helpful perspectives: Singleness from God’s perspective - how God views singleness Singleness from the perspective of ‘beside’ - singles in community Singleness from ‘beneath’ - particular issues singles face 22/4/2012: Sexuality: Biblical View vs Culture Pastor Graeme Prentice - 1Cor 6:12-20 Download In our highly sexualised culture, how that God view human sexuality? How are we influenced by the world in which we live? Pastor Graeme provides some biblical guidelines: 1. Where does sex fit in our purpose as human beings? In Genesis 2, God created man and woman as his “helper”. They were naked and unashamed. All through the Bible God promotes sex as a beautiful part of the relationship between one man and one woman in marriage. 2. Why only marriage? The sexual relationship is designed for maximum intimacy. This “communication” is only suitable in a safe , secure, permanent, mutual loving marriage at the exclusion of all others. At the “fall” in Genesis 3 there was a realisation of nakedness and shame and numerous deviations of sexual practices corrupted the human experience including adultery, homosexuality, bestiality, incest, rape, prostitution, sex before marriage, polygamy. Every other expression outside of marriage is declared “unholy.” 3. Why is sexual sin so wrong? 1Cor 6:13,15,18,19 Romans 6:13, 12:1,2 - remind us that sexual sin is offering the parts of our body to sin and not to the Lord. It is an act of idolatry. Sexual sin is very addictive and controls a persons life. (1Cor 6:12) 4. How can we control wrongful sexual desires? “Flee sexual immorality” - 1Cor 6:18. The impulses of sexual desire and lust are too powerful. We must flee. It starts with the eyes. Matthew 6:22. We must train our eyes to turn away from sexually explicit media. 5. What if I have fallen? You were WASHED - You were SANCTIFIED - You were JUSTIFIED. God promises a new start if we will trust in Him. 15/4/2012: Another Look At Grace Pastor Graeme Prentice - Romans 3:21-28 Download 1. ACCEPTING GOD’S GRACE a. To understand the power of God’s grace we must first recognise our plight without it. I am fallen, deprived, evil, in darkness, foolish, estranged, rebellious, a slave to sin, hard hearted, impure, enemies of God, defiled, unholy, child of the Devil, trapped, stuck imprisoned and destined for hell, just to name a few of the Bibles images. b. Romans 5:6-10 tells us that while we were in this powerless state, Jesus died for us. His love is not only unwarranted: we do not deserve it, but we are unworthy: we deserve the opposite. We were God’s enemies. c. The Bible teaches the absoluteness of God’s grace through Jesus Christ. Justified, Reconciled, Redeemed, Adopted, Regenerated, Sanctified, Propitiated. d. We are given a promise of: Acts 3:19 - Times of refreshment Acts 3:38 - The gift of the Holy Spirit Heb 10:22 - cleansing from a guilty conscience 2. BELIEVING GOD’S GRACE 1. We tend to want to “fix” our own lives. 2. Jesus calls us to “come to him” and allow Him to save us. 3. King David's cry, “Create in me a clean heart.” Psalm 51, Ezekiel 36:26 We need a new “engine”, not a self improvement program. 4. Philippians 2:13 - God helps us to “want” the same as Him. 3. OVERFLOWING WITH GOD’S GRACE 1. King David takes over from Saul who hated him with a passion. 2. David enjoys the “prosperity” of the Lord. 3. David asks, “Is there anyone still left .. Who I can show grace today?” 2 Sam 9:1 8/4/2012: Easter Sunday celebration 'The Man' series: Real humanity shown through the life of Jesus Part 7: John 20:10-23::Graeme Prentice Download 6/4/2012: Good Friday On Good Friday we were privileged to have Kristen May from Backyard Bard join us and present John chapters 18-20:10 in dramatic form. 1. Jesus finished what God called him to do. Jesus fulfilled what he came to earth to achieve. Take on the sins of humanity. The task was set before, by his father, and he persevered through everything to achieve that goal. John 17:4: I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. Finishing is important to Jesus. God sent Jesus to earth so; · That we may know God (John 17:4) · That we may be saved through him (John 3:17) There was determination in Jesus, right till the end. Philippians 1:6- being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. 2. The way Jesus finished was important. Something that we can really see in John, is how well Jesus finishes God's mission. We saw last week how even in his final hours, as he was hanging, dying on a cross, he was concerned for the wellbeing of those around him. John 19:25-27. Jesus is the greatest example to us of what it means to follow God. The way in which he did the Fathers will, is the model for us to follow. Earlier in John, in chapter 6:60 & 66, we see that some disciples chose to turn away from Jesus, when they found it too hard. How do you react when it gets tough? As Christians we get the best of everything, on the one hand. When we accept Jesus, we receive a new life, an abundant life, we are forgiven of our sins, we can live by grace, we experience love in its purest form, we have a personal relationship with the creator of the universe This being said, Jesus never said our lives would be a bed of roses when we accept him. Jesus told his disciples that they would be hated by the world, that they should expect to be treated badly. · John 15:20-21 He warns his disciples to prepare for hardships. So it is with us, we should prepare for a hard finish, when it comes to following God. Sometimes in life, it becomes extremely difficult to follow God, but through perseverance and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we will finish with the victory. Jesus promised his disciples that He wouldn't leave them as orphans in the world (14:18), but that God would send his Holy Spirit to come and guide them, and so it is with us. We are not alone in our walk! 3. Perseverance is the key to finishing. Something that Jesus models to us, so clearly is what it looks like to live a life of perseverance. · He had to persevere with disciples who often got it wrong and fled in his time of trial. · He had to persevere in the face of opposition from the leaders of his day · He had to persevere in the face of being brutally executed Perseverance is one of the big themes in the New Testament. · Romans 5:2-5 There is purpose to trials in our life. · James 1:2-4, 12 Perseverance is the key to living a life following Jesus Perseverance for me, is when life gets complicated or unfair, or just plain painful, I choose to journey with God through that time, and not decide that He is at fault. Perseverance for me is when I choose to follow God, when it is going to cost me something. What do you have to persevere with? 25/3/2012: 'The Man' series: Real humanity shown through the life of Jesus Part 5: Man of Compassion John 19:17-27::Graeme Prentice Download ITS TIME - two words that can be life changing. Like hearing your name in the doctors room, being called to the boundary line for a football match, starting an exam or a 9 month pregnant mother! What would it mean for you if Jesus uttered these words to you - “It’s time”1. Time to follow Jesus in courage. 1. Verse 17 marks a significant moment in Jesus journey: the point of no return. Judgement is pronounced and He is handed over to the soldiers for crucifixion. 2. In many ways Jesus’ crucifixion is quite normal. The Roman crucified up to 500 people a day at one time. The beating and wiping, the procession through the streets, nailed to a cross, up on a hill, a sign atop naming the crime: all these details were quite normal. 3. Jesus chose the cross. This part of the story was astonishing. Out of love for us He willingly suffered and died in our place. He was not a “victim” but a willing participant. He laid down His life for us. (John 10:17) 4. It’s time - Time for us to “take up our cross.” Time to make decisions of obedience, courage in following Jesus. 2. Time to follow Jesus in Trust 5. Verse 24 says “This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled” The prophecy for the soldiers casting lots for Jesus clothes is found in Psalm 22:18. There are over 300 prophecies in the old testament predicting details of Jesus life and death. There are 29 relating to His betrayal, arrest, death and resurrection. 6. Jesus knew exactly what was going on. While everyone else around him was in panic, Jesus remained calm. He knew that what was unfolding was the plan of the Father for redemption of mankind. 7. Its time - Time to trust Jesus with whatever lies ahead for each of us. 3. Time to follow Jesus in love 8. What would we see if we were to look in Jesus eyes as He suffered? LOVE A remarkable element in the story is that only minutes from an agonising death, Jesus paused to show love to His mother and a disciple. (V25) 9. Even in the face of severe pain and death he loved others. 10. We so often have excuses for not loving others. We will love others when we are not too busy, when we’re feeling better, when we sort out our own problems, when someone loves us first. 11. It’s time - time to love others regardless of what is happening in our lives. 18/3/2012: 'The Man' series: Real humanity shown through the life of Jesus Part 4: Man of Trust John 19:1-16::Graeme Prentice Download ![]() NO COMPROMISE was a biography written on the life of a Christian singer called Keith Green. His life was a picture of radical change as he sought to follow Jesus without compromise. The three characters in this passage show how each dealt with the temptation to compromise. 1. Pilate - Pilate was the Roman Governor of Judea and had the power to set Jesus free or have Him crucified. He went through several phases of resistance until he capitulated to the angry crowd. 1. Pilate interrogated Jesus only to find there was no basis for a charge. (18:38) 2. Pilate’s judgement was met by an angry crowd who resisted his judgement. (19:6) 3. Pilate tried to appease the crowd by having Jesus tortured and mocked. (19:1-3) 4. Pilate became more afraid but tried desperately to get them to accept his judgement. (19:5,12) 5. Final Pilate capitulated to the crowd and handed Jesus over for crucifixion. (19:16) When are you tempted to give in to the pressure of the “crowd”? 2. The Religious Jews 1. The Jews wanted Jesus dead at all cost. They sacrificed the process of justice to achieve this end. 2. They refused to accept Jesus as the Son of God, Messiah, despite all the evidence. (V7) 3. This lead to the ultimate betrayal of God as King as they shouted “We have no king but Caesar!” (19:15) 4. “The end justifies the means” was their motto. This lead to total corruption and compromise of their righteousness before God. When are you tempted to sacrifice morals or right behaviour in order to achieve an “end.” 3. Jesus 1. Jesus obeyed the Father regardless of the consequence. (John 4:34) 2. Jesus was driven by love. (Romans 5:8) 3. Jesus was courageous and faithful to His call, even unto death. (Matthew 26:53) 4. Jesus disciplined His life for maximum effect, even if it meant an agonising death on the cross. 11/3/2012: 'The Man' series: Real humanity shown through the life of Jesus Part 3: Man of Courage John 18:28-40::Graeme Prentice: Download ![]() JOHN 18:28-40 Who is in charge here? This question we can sometimes ask when we have a complaint or an important issue that we feel needs addressing. If we turn the question around and ask it of our own lives, the answer we give has a huge impact on who we are, our cha racter, lifestyle, happiness and destiny. 1. Is Jesus your King? Real men recognise Jesus as King. In the Roman part of Jesus trial before crucifixion the narrative leads up to the question of Pilate, “Are you the King of the Jews?” 1. Jesus is the king of creation. He is the King of kings. He is sovereign over all. 2. The Jews and Pilate failed to recognise His kingship. 3. Instead of “putting out the red carpet” they tried to push him out and eliminate him. 4. The question for us is “Is Jesus your King? Have you accepted and acknowledged his sovereign rule in your life?” 2. Are you living in Jesus’ Kingdom? Real men live in God’s kingdom. Jesus explained to Pilate that His kingdom was not of this world. 1. Jesus taught in parables to explain the spiritual kingdom of God. 2. The parable of the rich fool (Luke 12:13) shows the contrast between the earthly kingdom of possessions and the spiritual kingdom of love for God. 3. The question for us is: “Which kingdom are you living in? Which one dominates your thoughts, time, energy, passion?” 3. Is Jesus your truth? Real men know where to find the truth. Pilate eventually asks the question, “What is truth.” The source of our truth in life defines us. 1. Your answer to this question is one of the most important in life. 2. Our secular society seeks to find absolute truth in empty places, eg humanism, science, self. 3. Jesus shows the truth is personal. “I am the truth.” Everything else is a “house of cards.” 4. Is Jesus your truth? 4/3/2012: 'The Man' series: Real humanity shown through the life of Jesus Part 2: Man of Authenticity John 18:15-27::Geoff Rowse:: Download This message looks at the issue of authenticity through the story of Peter's denial and of Jesus trial. After his arrest Jesus is taken to be interrogated and during this time Peter denies him 3 times. During this time Jesus is being interrogated he answers the High Priests questions about His teaching and His disciples with dignity and simplicity basically saying, " My teaching has been transparent, I haven't taught things in secret, You know exactly what I have said so why are you questioning Me?". Here we have a strong contrast between Jesus' authenticity on the one hand and the inauthenticity of Peter & the religious leaders on the other hand. It is significant that Jesus shared His strongest and most devastating words with the spiritual leaders of the nation, people who should have been a strong example of authentic people but whose lives were filled with hypocrisy..How do we then become people of God, who in public and in private, at church and at work, when people are watching us and when they are not, who are consistent, true and authentic men and women ? 1. We need to be transparent people. Being transparent means we are willing to share with others our struggles in the journey of faith because as we do we are set free from those inner struggles and secrets which stop us being what God wants us to be. Someone who I admire greatly shared once that he faced a tremendous struggle with a sexual issue which kept him in bondage but the breakthrough came when he went to someone he could trust and said, "This is what I am struggling with, I need help." He began the journey to freedom and to effective ministry as a result. 2. We need to recognise that when we seek help from God and from others it is an admission that we can't solve the problem or issue in our own strength. Our culture has taught us that to seek prayer or help over an issue is a sign of weakness when in reality it is a sign of strength. It is the same when a marriage is struggling. It is a sign of strength to ask for help. To pray and to ask others to pray is a signal that we are in need, that we can't solve the issue and that to get help we are willing to admit our need to others. 3. So much of the time we don't have the confidence to be authentic because we are governed by the fear of what others think of us or what might happen to us if we are authentic For the Pharisees the fear was that they wouldn't be approved as good people by others. For Peter it was the fear of what might happen to him if he admitted he was a disciple of Jesus. So we face similar fears.. We are often bound by the fear of what others think of us or that we might be rejected. We also struggle so much with the fear of what might happen to us if we share our faith. At the end of John in chapter 21 we find Jesus seeking out Peter so he could forgive him of his denials, reaffirm his love and tell him about his ministry for the future. This is grace in action. 26/2/2012: 'The Man' series: Real humanity shown through the life of Jesus Part 1: Jesus arrested - Man of Commitment John 18:1-14::Graeme Prentice::
Download Our culture’s understanding of what makes a “real man”. Eg. Doesn’t eat quiche, 6ft 4” and full of muscle. Drinks beer and gambles, always wins the girl/fight/money! In the narrative of John 18-20 we see the true humanity come through in Jesus as he encounters the most challenging of circumstances leading up to the cross. 1. Real Men Pray - v1 A. Jesus and prayer - Jesus prayed often, in the morning, at night, through the night, before critical events, before miracles, for himself, for His disciples, for all believers, alone, with His disciples, with many. B. If Jesus, the Son of God, needed to pray, how much more we? C. It may well be that the most “real” man among us is the one who turns up at the prayer meeting! 2. Real Men Accept Others - v2 A. Fascinating relationship between Jesus and Judas. Judas started out as one of the twelve, chosen by Jesus even though Jesus knew Judas would betray Him. Jesus treated Judas the same as the other 11. He even protected him to some extent from animosity from the other disciples. B. Jesus was not threatened by other people’s sin. He did not see it as His place to judge. He was willing to work with anyone who would follow. We probably would have kicked Judas out! C. Jesus treated everyone with dignity, grace and love, even His enemies. That is a real man! 3. Real Men Don’t Resort To Violence - V3f A. A scary mob of hundreds with weapons and lanterns advanced on Jesus. B. Jesus was not intimidated by them. He stepped forward. “Here I am.” C. Simon Peter struck out violently and Jesus rebuked him and repaired the violence done against the Temple servant. D. Jesus never resorted to violence. Neither should we. Real men don’t resort to violence in order to gain power, advantage or control. 03/04/2011:: Meet Jesus Pt6 - How to live a life of significance - John 12:1-11::Graeme Prentice::Download "How to live a life of significance" This Sunday was the 6th in the series on “MEET JESUS” and focused the encounter in John 12 of Mary pouring perfume on Jesus’ feet. She was caught - The was no doubt about her guilt. She was caught in the act. The Pharisees knew, She knew, Jesus knew. 2. She was to be punished - The Hebrew law was right to pass sentence. The sentence was death by stoning or strangulation. 3 problems surrounding the incident 1. The man was missing 2. The proper court officials were missing 3. The Pharisees had an agenda to trap Jesus 3. A snap shot of every human being - THE ACCUSERS 1. They were setting a trap - If Jesus approved he would be seen as harsh and out of touch with real people and discredited. He could be arrested by the Romans for instigating criminal activity of an unauthorised stoning. - If Jesus opposed He would be seen as being week on sin and opposing the law of Moses and lose credibility with the people. 2. They were too quick to judge - The fervency of their accusations seemed out of step with the situation. 3. They too were guilty - “Let he who is without sin caste the first stone.” Jesus recognised in this mob perhaps even the same sin they were accusing her of. JESUS 1. Jesus protected her - He diverted the attention away from the woman toward himself. He basically saved her from certain death. 2. Jesus released her - “Neither do I condemn you.” He gave her life back to her. He gave her a second chance. 3. Jesus challenged her - “Go now and sin no more” Jesus loved her too much to leave her in her life of sin. CONCLUSIONS 1. As Jesus did, we are to hate the sin and love the sinner. 2. In our own sin we are to run toward Jesus, not away from Him. During this time Jesus is being interrogated he answers the High Priests questions about His teaching and His disciples with dignity and simplicity basically saying, " My teaching has been transparent, I haven't taught things in secret, You know exactly what I have said so why are you questioning Me?".
